PPA LEGAL LIABILITY INSURANCE
The PPA was successful in obtaining legal liability insurance — and at no cost to you!
As you are likely well familiar, SB20-217, signed into law by the Governor on June 19, 2020, states in part:
“(4) NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW, A PEACE OFFICER’S EMPLOYER SHALL INDEMNIFY ITS PEACE OFFICERS FOR ANY LIABILITY INCURRED BY THE PEACE OFFICER AND FOR ANY JUDGMENT OR SETTLEMENT ENTERED AGAINST THE PEACE OFFICER FOR CLAIMS ARISING PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION; EXCEPT THAT, IF THE PEACE OFFICER’S EMPLOYER DETERMINES THAT THE OFFICER DID NOT ACT UPON A GOOD FAITH AND REASONABLE BELIEF THAT THE ACTION WAS LAWFUL, THEN THE PEACE OFFICER IS PERSONALLY LIABLE AND SHALL NOT BE INDEMNIFIED BY THE PEACE OFFICER’S EMPLOYER FOR FIVE PERCENT OF THE JUDGMENT OR SETTLEMENT OR TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, WHICHEVER IS LESS. …”
This insurance is to cover this portion of the new law. The coverage also extends to both on and off duty work, regardless of rank, and so long as you are performing a police function. There is NO dues increase for this coverage.
Both forms can be obtained on the website under the “Members” tab, or below. It is a quick, simple and easy process. If you have any questions, please, of course, do not hesitate to reach out. Remember, you must complete both forms.
